Harvest 2024 Begins: A Bountiful Season Unfolds at John Anthony Vineyards

After a long season of preparation and care, Harvest 2024 is officially underway at John Anthony Vineyards.

The 2024 growing season started strong. A wet winter with significant rainfall replenished our vineyards, leading to healthy, vibrant vines. Bud break arrived in mid-March, slightly delayed due to a cool spring, and the summer brought consistent warmth with a few well-timed heat spikes. All signs point to another exceptional vintage from John Anthony Vineyards.

Hands-On Harvest

Throughout the growing season, our team worked meticulously in the vineyards to ensure each vine reached its full potential. Leafing, cluster thinning, and canopy management were all handled with precision, guided by John Anthony Truchard’s 30-plus years of experience and our dedicated vineyard crew. The result—fruit with a perfect balance of sugar, acidity, and flavor concentration.

What to Expect from the 2024 Vintage

The early signs from this year’s harvest indicate a truly remarkable vintage. Our flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is coming in with small, concentrated berries, suggesting the bold flavors and deep structure that Napa Valley is known for. Our signature Church Vineyard and Carneros Sauvignon Blancs are poised to deliver crisp acidity and vibrant aromatics, beautifully shaped by the cool mornings and sunny afternoons that defined this growing season.

Each of our estate vineyards—whether it’s Church Vineyard in Los Carneros, Coombsville Vineyard in the Coombsville AVA, or the R/D, GnR, and Crane Vineyards in Oak Knoll District—brings something unique to the table. These sites will contribute to wines that are rich in diversity, complexity, and a true reflection of their terroir.

Looking Ahead

As harvest continues in the coming weeks, we’ll remain focused on bringing in the rest of the fruit from our Napa Valley estates. The combination of a rainy winter, ideal growing conditions, and hands-on vineyard management has set the stage for wines that will capture the essence of the 2024 vintage. We’re eager to see how this year’s grapes develop in the winery and can’t wait to share these wines with you.

Stay tuned for more updates as we move through harvest, and join us in raising a glass to the 2024 vintage—one we believe will be a true testament to Napa Valley winemaking at its finest.

Explore our exclusive collection and experience top Napa Valley wines crafted with exceptional quality.

Fall has arrived at John Anthony Vineyards, bringing with it one of the year's most highly anticipated releases. The 2024 Fall Release showcases six remarkable, limited-production wines that beautifully embody the spirit of our distinguished Napa Valley estates. Each bottle is a testament to the dedication of our team and the unique terroir of our Napa Valley estates.

These offerings are limited, so don’t miss the chance to acquire these exclusive wines on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Leading with the exceptional 2022 Jameson Canyon Vineyard Chardonnay. The inaugural release of this vineyard-designate wine from our estate Jameson Canyon Vineyard in the cool-climate reaches of the Napa Valley’s southern rolling hills. This small-batch, hand-crafted wine underwent barrel fermentation for 11 months, aged in 60% American oak barrels and 40% French oak barrels, resulting in a beautifully layered and complex Chardonnay.

This is followed by the deep and expressive 2021 John Anthony Crane Vineyard Merlot. Crafted from the mature and robust Merlot vines planted by John in 1996, this 2021 vintage displays the distinctive characteristics of this tiny four-acre estate in Napa Valley’s Oak Knoll District. Characterized by a structured core with soft edges and focused acidity, this Merlot has excellent cellaring potential.

The release continues with the not-to-be-missed 2021 John Anthony Crane Vineyard Syrah from the same, historic Oak Knoll estate. Made from the Syrah vines that John personally planted in 1999, this limited-production wine is a true expression of the Oak Knoll District. The 2021 crop from Crane Vineyard was marked by intense, small berries that displayed notable structure and rich, complex flavors. A true gem in this collection.

Following is our signature 2021 John Anthony Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted from grapes sourced from our premier Cabernet estates across the Valley. This quintessential Napa Valley Cabernet is distinguished by its vibrant fruit character and remarkable complexity.

The first of our Fall Release reserve wines is the 2020 John Anthony Reserve Merlot, a standout selection from the finest barrels of the vintage. This ultra-limited wine presents with a dense fruit core and chewy tannins, unwinding into a refined finish. With its well-integrated cocoa nib and fresh tobacco notes, it highlights the complexity and depth that define the best of Crane Vineyard’s Merlot.

The collection culminates with the 2020 John Anthony Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, an exemplary wine crafted from the best barrels of the vintage. Complex layers and refined structure are supported by a rich, dense core and seamlessly integrated tannins. The perfect wine to round out the 2024 Fall Release.

A testament to heritage, winegrowing, and winemaking, this Fall Release is highlighted by a variety of wines that showcase our Napa Valley estates. We hope that these wines find a place at your table, shared with family and friends. Visit us at the John Anthony Tasting Lounge in downtown Napa to savor these highly sought-after wines. The King of Reds: John Anthony Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignons

Photo of John Anthony Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon bottles, showcasing the rich, deep hues of the wine. The elegant labels and dark glass reflect the premium quality of these wines, known for their bold flavors and prestigious reputation as the 'King of Reds' in Napa Valley.

John Anthony Vineyards has a storied legacy of crafting exceptional Cabernet Sauvignons in world-class Napa Valley for two decades. Each of our single-vineyard Cabernets tells a unique story, shaped by its specific terroir. As we prepare for our role as presenting sponsors of the 2024 Harvest STOMP and the upcoming 2024 Fall Release, we celebrate this noble varietal by honoring its rich heritage and character.

Discover the distinct personalities of our notable single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons: Coombsville, R/D, GnR, Epps, Twisted Oak, and Calistoga.

Single-Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons

2020 Coombsville Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Coombsville Vineyard is a wild and untamed-looking four-acre micro-estate that established a name for itself before the Coombsville area became a designated American Viticultural Area. The Cabernet Sauvignon vines on this property are head-trained and dry-farmed creating remarkable intensity and expressiveness in the berries grown here. A true standout in the exclusive single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon collection. The 2020 vintage presents with deep, ruby-purple hues in the glass that anticipate aromas of deep black cherry, lavender, and graphite. On the palate, find notes of fresh blackberries and dried herbs. This wine was aged for 28 months in 80 percent new French oak barrels with limited production at only 200 cases.

2020 R/D Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

R/D Vineyard stands as one of four John Anthony Vineyards Oak Knoll District vineyards, ranking as the second largest of these properties at 3.5 acres. Nearly two decades ago, John discovered these adjacent family estates in their underdeveloped state and made the strategic decision to plant them exclusively with Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Today, the rich volcanic soils of R/D Vineyard are known for producing Cabernet Sauvignons with remarkable energy and powerful structure. The 2020 vintage delivers a bounty of red and black fruits—ripe raspberry, blackberry, and blackcurrant. On the palate find floral notes with subtle nuances of dried leather, sweet cigars, and sweet and savory spices. This wine was aged for 28 months in 67% new French oak barrels. Only 150 cases were available upon its release.

2020 GnR Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Covering a mere two and a half acres of gravelly, bench-land soils in Napa Valley’s Oak Knoll District, GnR Vineyard produces low yields of intensely flavored Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2020 vintage presents with dark purple hues in the glass with aromas of black fruits, macerated strawberries, and a tinge of earthiness. The palate delivers notes of dried red berries and a savory blend of fresh spices. This wine was aged for 28 months in 71% new French oak barrels, with only 150 cases produced.

2020 Epps Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Epps Vineyard is the smallest of our four Oak Knoll vineyard properties at just under two acres, and produces about four barrels of wine from four blocks. Situated on the valley floor, these blocks run north-south and are bathed in abundant sunlight providing excellent ripening for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The 2020 Epps Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has strong aromas of black raspberries, blackberries, and Bing Cherry. Notes of dried leather, savory tobacco, and sweet oak follow. This wine was aged in 85% new French oak, with a limited 150 cases released.

2019 Twisted Oak Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Unique amongst John Anthony's four Oak Knoll District vineyards, Twisted Oak has a higher elevation and different vine orientations. Perched upon a steep hillside, these vines experience varying degrees of sunlight throughout the day due to the natural contours of the land, resulting in the unparalleled intensity of flavor in the fruit harvested from this unique plot. The 2019 vintage marks just the third micro-production vineyard designated from Twisted Oak. Aromas of baked, red fruits and savory-spiced plums reveal hints of dried rose and fresh fig. A powerful and progressive mouthfeel reveals flavors of cassis, cherry cobbler, and tobacco leaf. This wine was aged for 28 months in 80 percent new French oak barrels with a total of 200 cases produced.

2019 Calistoga Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

The northernmost of all our vineyards, this 10-acre Calistoga site receives the most warmth and is usually the first site to be picked come harvest. John isolates the finest-producing blocks for the vineyard-designate John Anthony Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 vintage presents hues of deep ruby-purple yield to engulfing aromas of brambly blackberry, black currant, and forest floor. The bouquet is echoed on the palate with accents of black cherry, black pepper, and cedar. This wine is aged for 28 months in 70 percent new French oak barrels with only 200 cases produced.

2024 Growing Season: A Vintage to Remember

After an ample winter with significant rainfall, John Anthony’s Napa Valley estates are gearing up for what promises to be an exceptional vintage. The vines have responded positively to the winter rains, resulting in healthy, vibrant canopies and excellent cluster development.

Weather Conditions and Vineyard Health

The 2024 winter brought abundant rain, replenishing groundwater and setting the stage for a thriving growing season. Bud break occurred in mid-March, slightly later than usual due to the cool spring, but the vines have since flourished under the sunny days of early summer. With large, full canopies from the last two rain seasons, the grapes are now basking in sunlight, expressing the unique terroir of each vineyard site.

As our vineyard sites enter the fruit set stage, the vines are transitioning towards veraison, the crucial period when grapes begin to change color and develop their characteristic flavors. This stage marks a critical phase in the ripening process, determining the quality and complexity of the upcoming vintage.

Vineyard Management

Throughout the growing season, the vineyard team at John Anthony has meticulously managed our vineyards in Napa Valley to ensure optimal grape development. Tasks such as leafing, cluster thinning, and canopy management are carried out with precision, guided by decades of experience and a deep understanding of Napa Valley’s microclimates.

John Anthony Truchard, with over 30 years in Napa Valley winemaking, leads a dedicated team that is committed to producing wines of exceptional quality. Their attention to detail and commitment to sustainable practices ensure that each vineyard site reaches its full potential.

Estate Highlights

The excitement for the 2024 vintage extends across John Anthony’s estates, including Church Vineyard in Los Carneros AVA, Coombsville Vineyard in Coombsville AVA, and R/D, GnR, Epps, and Crane Vineyards in Oak Knoll District AVA, and Jameson Canyon Vineyard in the southern rolling hills of Napa Valley. Each vineyard benefits from unique terroir, contributing to the diversity and complexity of the wines produced.

Looking Forward

As we anticipate the upcoming harvest, all signs point to a vintage that celebrates the best of Napa Valley winemaking. The combination of ample winter rains, meticulous vineyard management, and optimal grape development sets the stage for wines that reflect the essence of their terroir and the dedication of the vineyard team.

Wine enthusiasts and collectors alike can look forward to adding these exceptional wines to their collections. Stay tuned as we approach harvest season, and raise a glass to the 2024 vintage – a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of John Anthony Vineyards.

A New Era of John Anthony Syrah—Carneros Gap Vineyard

Napa Valley has gained widespread recognition for its world-class Cabernet Sauvignon, however the Valley’s diverse terroir fosters the growth of several powerful red wine varietals. Those in the know, seek out Syrahs made by John Anthony Vineyards.

The 2020 Carneros Gap Vineyard Syrah was one of the single-vineyard gems in the 2023 Spring Release collection. Grown in a micro-estate vineyard adjacent to the home of John Anthony Truchard. This vineyard site is perched in a distinctive position in the rolling hills of Los Carneros, experiencing the direct influence of the wind and fog from San Pablo Bay. The cool climate allows for an extended growing season and highly concentrated flavor development in the grapes.

The first Carneros Gap Vineyard Syrah vines were planted in 1996, allowing this pristine 5-acre block of vines to mature and flourish. The Syrah crop from this vineyard site is marked by small berries that impart notable structure and concentration yielding bold, opulent wines brimming with intense black fruit flavors and exceptional aging potential.

This is evident in the inaugural vintage of the 2020 John Anthony Carneros Gap Vineyard Syrah, which presents with deep garnet hues in the glass. Continuing the Legacy of John Anthony Vineyards

John’s heritage has always been rooted in Napa. As a second-generation vintner, each of his terroir-driven wines tells the story of his history in Napa Valley. This legacy is evident through our expansive portfolio of single-vineyard wines from Calistoga, Coombsville, Los Carneros, and Oak Knoll AVAs, all within the Napa Valley.

Following the celebration of John Anthony Vineyard’s 20th anniversary year, we strive to continue this legacy by diving into the rich, untapped potential of the undiscovered corners of this AVA, and expanding our diverse portfolio of Napa Valley wines.

Our notable collection of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon wines includes the Coombsville Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, R/D Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, GnR Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Epps Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Twisted Oak Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, and Calistoga Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Each of these Cabernets reflect the unique characteristics of these vineyards, shaped by the soil and microclimates. This is strengthened by John’s selection of clones, rootstocks, trellising systems, and irrigation techniques. Every vintage reveals a new identity for these vines, influenced by weather patterns, and the winemaking techniques of that particular year.

Continuing the Legacy

As our younger vines begin to achieve maturity and complexity, we look forward to releasing additional wines from these burgeoning sites to share with The LIST and dedicated collectors alike.

Joining the John Anthony Vineyards portfolio in 2024, a single-vineyard Chardonnay from Jameson Canyon. A NEW BAR FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS

A NEW HIGH BAR FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS.

John Anthony Vineyard’s 20th anniversary year is coming to a close. We set the bar high with a year of special releases, memorable dinners, and outstanding events that celebrated two decades of heritage, wine growing, and winemaking.  Here’s a little look back…and a teaser of what to expect as John Anthony embarks on our next chapter.

MORE VINEYARD-DESIGNATED RELEASES THAN EVER

John has devoted over two decades to crafting Napa Valley wines—uncovering hidden gem estates, selecting the precise varietals and clones to grow there, and optimizing each growing season. Time, patience, and consistency have paid off. Our 20th-anniversary releases brought 16 new releases to the John Anthony portfolio, with a special focus on vineyard-designate bottlings—greatly expanding our Cabernet Sauvignon program. Tasting single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon side by side in the new “Cab is King” tasting experience, brings appreciation for this noble varietal to another level. We invite you to join us here in downtown Napa.

The 2023 Spring Release included eight releases, including the striking 2019 John Anthony GnR Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2019 John Anthony Epps Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, an ultra-limited from the smallest of John’s Oak Knoll District vineyards. The 2023 Fall Release was followed by eight additional releases including the 2019 John Anthony Twisted Oak Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2020 John Anthony Crane Vineyard Merlot, both vineyards in The Oak Knoll District that John has been farming for 20 years now.

A GROWING SEASON WORTHY OF CELEBRATION

This year brought a long and bountiful growing season. An unusually wet winter and early spring brought ample vine development. The moderate spring and summer with few heat spikes allowed for a gradual and gentle ripening period. Each key indicator (bud break, bloom, and veraison) occurred approximately two to four weeks later than usual, setting the tone for an unusually late harvest. Both the quality and yields we’ve seen are exceptional across all our estates and we are beyond excited to craft these wines over the coming months and years to eventually release them as John Anthony’s 20th-anniversary vintage.

HISTORIC DINNER CELEBRATIONS

The 20th anniversary year was filled with a series of incredible new events, including nine Michelin-caliber dinners hosted at the historic John Anthony Church Vineyards. These remarkable culinary experiences featured passed appetizers, an amuse bouche, and a five-course seated dinner paired with an array of library offerings, spanning back to the inaugural 2003 vintages. These special dinners allowed us to bring together loyal patrons and friends, many of whom have borne witness to the first 20 years of our evolution. We look forward to continuing these in 2024 and invite you to learn more.

PHILANTHROPY AND FUN

In gratitude for 20 years of making beautiful wines here in Napa Valley, we brought John Anthony wines from the Tasting Lounge to various events across the country in support of important causes, and special interests. It was a gift to meet up with current LIST members and share our wines with new communities. It is a program we plan to continue—please enquire with the John Anthony wine education and hospitality team. We hope to see you at many of these events next year too.

  • BottleRock Napa Valley Platinum Lounge
  • Collective Napa Valley Barrel Auction
  • Aspen FOOD & WINE Classic
  • V Foundation Wine Celebration
  • Harvest STOMP
  • One Mind Music Festival

In a stunning culmination of celebrations, we closed out the year with the John Anthony Platinum Celebration hosting LIST members, our friends, family, partners, and team at the historic John Anthony Mansion. A magical evening from start to finish with La Dame Michele poured alongside The Caviar Co., gourmet food pairings, library pourings, a silent auction, platinum desserts, and dancing until late. It was an incredible evening to remember and possibly repeat… Join The LIST to be assured an invitation. Learn more.
