The First Chapter of the Vintage

Long before harvest, the vineyard awakens in subtle ways. At John Anthony Vineyards, each vintage reveals a distinct personality, shaped by the unique conditions of the growing season. Early spring marks the first chapter, when the vines begin to emerge from dormancy and the foundation for the year ahead is set.

Budbreak

Budbreak is the vineyard’s first visible sign of life in early spring. The first tender buds swell from the dormant vine and unfurl into delicate green shoots, marking the official start of the growing season. These early shoots are sensitive to the elements, and each decision in the vineyard carries weight.

At John Anthony Vineyards, careful vineyard management is essential at this stage. Winegrowing is guided by observation, allowing the vineyard to progress naturally while protecting the integrity of the fruit to come.

Flowering

After a month or so of early growth, the vines enter one of the most crucial periods of the growing season—flowering. Small, tightly clustered blossoms appear, each with the potential to form a single berry. Frost, wind, and temperature shifts can all influence the outcome, shaping both yield and quality.

Fruit Set

After a few weeks of flowering, the vines move into fruit set. Petals fall away, revealing tiny green berries that begin to form into the clusters recognizable in harvest. While the vines continue to develop, attention in the vineyard remains constant. Conditions are carefully monitored, as the young fruit is still sensitive to the elements. From this point forward, the grapes begin their steady progression towards ripeness, shaped by Napa Valley’s dry Mediterranean climate—one of the rarest in the world, and a defining factor in the region’s consistency and quality.

These early moments in the vineyard shape a wine long before it is poured. At John Anthony Vineyards, precision winegrowing during the earliest stages of the vintage is essential to cultivating fruit of the utmost quality and crafting wines of excellence.
