Welcome to the John Anthony Vineyard Blog
Twenty Years of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

When John Anthony Truchard released his first wine in 2006, the vision was simple: craft exceptional wines from vineyard sites he planted and farmed throughout Napa Valley.
The inaugural release, the 2003 John Anthony Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, earned 92 Points from Wine Spectator critic James Laube upon release and laid the foundation for what would become John Anthony Vineyards. Twenty years later, the philosophy that guided the first vintage remains unchanged: respect for heritage and the land, precision winegrowing, and meticulous winemaking.
The 2023 John Anthony Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2023 John Anthony Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a commemorative bottling honoring two decades of John Anthony Vineyards. Harvested on our 20th anniversary, this wine reflects years of cultivating distinguished Napa Valley vineyard sites and a winemaking philosophy rooted in place.
Sourced from Oak Knoll District, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Los Carneros, this wine captures the diversity of Napa Valley through a vineyard-first lens. The exceptional 2023 growing season, marked by cool temperatures and extended hang time, produced fruit of remarkable depth, balance, and character.
In the glass, the wine shines deep ruby-purple with brilliant clarity. Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark cherry are layered with bay leaf, cedar spice, and hints of graphite. A rich core of black cherry, black plum, and cassis unfolds across the palate, framed by savory spice, subtle cocoa notes, and fine-grained tannins that carry through a long, elegant finish.
Aged for 20 months in French oak from fourteen premier cooperages, the wine balances power with precision while preserving the purity of the fruit. Recently awarded 93 Points by Lisa Perrotti-Brown of The Wine Palate, the 2023 vintage drinks beautifully today while promising graceful evolution for years to come.
Available now through a limited pre-release offering ahead of its November release, the wine is also available in limited large-format bottles—including magnum, 3L, 6L, and 9L formats—for the first time since 2008.
Celebrating Two Decades of Cabernet Soirée
To commemorate this milestone, John and Michele Truchard will welcome guests to the John Anthony Mansion on July 25th for the Celebrating Two Decades of Cabernet Soirée featuring the pre-release of the 2023 John Anthony Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
The evening offers one of the first opportunities to taste the wine ahead of its official release, alongside a rare retrospective tasting of John Anthony Cabernet Sauvignon spanning two decades. Through a curated selection of library vintages, guests will experience the evolution of the wine from its earliest expressions to the newly unveiled 2023 vintage.
Guests will enjoy a culinary experience by Estate Chef Logan Foos, live music, and complimentary bottle etching throughout the evening. The soirée is an opportunity to reflect on the people, places, and vintages that have shaped John Anthony Vineyards over the past twenty years—and to raise a glass to the next chapter.
“When we began John Anthony Vineyards 20 years ago, my goal was to make wines of origin, from small, select sites that I planted and farmed, that would be enjoyed and respected. We've been blessed by the reception our wines have received, and I'm looking forward to the next 20 years." – John Anthony Truchard
